What Is Katam Powder? Natural Brown Hair Colour with Henna

Katam is a traditional botanical hair-colouring powder valued for creating natural-looking brown and deeper hair tones when used with henna. Although it remains less familiar than henna, katam has long been used in Yemeni beauty traditions as part of plant-based hair-colouring routines.

What Is Katam Powder?

Katam powder is produced from the dried and finely milled leaves of Buxus dioica, a plant traditionally associated with Yemen. The resulting botanical powder is mixed into a paste before being applied to the hair.

Unlike conventional oxidative hair dyes, katam does not lighten the natural hair colour. Instead, it deposits darker tones and is commonly combined with henna to adjust henna’s warm red and copper shades towards brown, chestnut and deeper brunette results.

Why Is Katam Used with Henna?

Henna naturally produces warm shades that can range from orange and copper to auburn and deep red, depending on the starting hair colour and the henna used.

Katam is traditionally combined with henna to soften these red tones and create a browner result. Henna also provides an important colour base, which is why katam is generally used with henna rather than treated as a direct replacement for it.

The balance between the two botanical powders influences the final shade:

  • A mixture containing more henna generally produces warmer red-brown or chestnut tones.

  • Increasing the proportion of katam can produce deeper and darker brown tones.

  • Results on grey or white hair may appear brighter or more varied than results on naturally dark hair.

Because every person’s hair is different, exact results cannot be guaranteed.

One-Step and Two-Step Methods

Katam and henna are commonly used through either a one-step or two-step process.

One-Step Method

In a one-step process, prepared henna and katam are combined into one mixture before application. This method is often chosen when the desired result is a warm brown, chestnut or medium-to-dark brunette shade.

The proportions can be adjusted according to the desired colour. More henna generally keeps the result warmer, while more katam may create a deeper brown.

Two-Step Method

In a two-step process, henna is applied first to establish a warm colour base. Katam is then used in a separate second application to deepen and darken the result.

This method may be preferred when stronger darkening or more noticeable coverage of grey and white hair is desired.

Always follow the preparation and application instructions supplied with each product.

What Colour Results Can Katam Create?

Depending on the starting hair colour, mixture proportions and application method, henna and katam may create shades such as:

  • Warm chestnut

  • Red-brown

  • Medium brown

  • Deep brown

  • Very dark brunette tones

Botanical colour develops differently on every head of hair. Previous chemical colouring, bleaching, hair porosity, application time and the natural base colour can all influence the result.

Katam and henna cannot lighten dark hair. On naturally dark hair, the effect may appear as additional depth or warmer brown reflections, especially in bright light.

Why Can Results Vary?

Plant-based hair colouring is naturally less predictable than conventional boxed dye. The final result can be influenced by:

  • The original hair colour

  • The amount of grey or white hair

  • Hair porosity and condition

  • Previous colour treatments

  • The ratio of henna to katam

  • Preparation and application time

A strand test is strongly recommended before applying the mixture to the entire head. This helps you observe the likely result on your own hair and adjust the mixture if necessary.

Tips Before Using Katam

  • Read the complete product instructions before preparing the mixture.

  • Perform a strand test before full application.

  • Wear gloves and protect clothing and nearby surfaces from staining.

  • Apply the paste carefully and evenly in sections.

  • Remember that botanical colour may continue to settle after rinsing.

  • Store the powder sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
